movies to watch: Netflix - Dec 2020

Streaming services these days have so much content, it can be overwhelming.  Film for Fans is here to help.  We comb through libraries to recommend options.

Here are 10 films to check out on Netflix:

The Death of Stalin – (2017)

This dark comedy details the sudden death of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and the power struggle that ensues.  This movie takes the absurdity that was Stalinism and eviscerates it with sarcastic comedy.

Steve Jobs – (2015)

Steve Jobs is a biopic about the enigmatic co-founder of Apple. Jobs’ life and character are revealed through 3 brilliantly crafted scenes that take place just prior to 3 of his famous product launches.  The tightly written script uses the fictional scenes to do a good job revealing the incredible strengths and deep weakness that marked Jobs’ life.

A Bridge Too Far – (1977)

This World War II film is about the daring “Operation Market Garden” where allied paratroopers were dropped behind enemy lines to hold several bridges to clear a path for the main force into Germany.  The movie features an all-star cast including: Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Gene Hackman & Anthony Hopkins amongst many more.

Nightcrawler – (2014)

Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a freelance video journalist who makes a living selling his crime scene footage.  He begins to smear the lines between observer and active participant. This film shows the toxic underbelly of media “if it bleeds it leads” culture.  It’s an engaging though disturbing film.

Definitely Maybe – (2008)

Ryan Reynolds plays a man facing divorce who attempts to explain his relational history to his daughter through story.  It’s a fun and charming movie with great relational drama and character development.  It’s a solid date night choice.
