All Quiet On The Western Front – 2022

A modern update on the 1928 novel by the same name.  All Quiet On the Western Front is the story of a young group of naive soldiers caught up in the patriotic fervor of World War I.  Their naiveté is quickly erased as they are faced with the daily horrors that confront them in a perpetual and seemingly endless war.

Ocean’s 12 – 2004

The second in the modern Ocean’s series, feature the return of the all-star cast from 2001’s Oceans 11.  This time instead of being the predators out to take down a casino, they find themselves on the run from the very man who they ripped off.  Can they pull off another con under duress to get them out of their situation and turn the tables on their pursuers?

Enola Holmes 2 – 2022

The second movie featuring Milly Bobby Brown’s return as the sister of Sherlock Holmes.  She’s back again, this time as a detective for hire on the case of a missing girl.  She’s helped again by friends and her famous brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill)

The Italian Job – 2003

This classic heist movie features and all-star cast and plenty of action and excitement.  After a successful job turns tragic when a member of the crew double crosses the team, the remaining members seek revenge as they attempt to steal back the treasure that was taken from them.  There are several standout scenes from this movie, including a chase scene with Mini Coopers through the subway.

The Bad Guys – 2022

The bad guys is a family animated movie voiced by Sam Rockwell, Mark Maron, and Awkwafina.  It’s the story of a gang of notorious animal criminals who pretend to seek rehabilitation to avoid prison.  But will faking rehab, actually lead to wanting to change?

Kingdom of Heaven – 2005

Ridley Scott’s sword and sandal follow up to 2000’s Gladiator details the story of a directionless widower who seeks to find purpose and meaning as a knight in the Holy Land where he’s called upon to defend Jerusalem against enemies from within and without. It’s a moving character story about honor and duty.

Crimson Tide – 1995

Crimson Tide is a submarine movie classic.  Set in the uncertainty of the initial post-cold war era, Crimson Tide pits a no-nonsense captain (Gene Hackman) against his new highly educated first officer (Denzel Washington) after receiving conflicting orders about launching a nuclear strike.  Mutiny ensues as the ship divides loyalties all in the midst of possible nuclear war.

Lucky Number Slevin – 2006

A fun, quirky movie that is part comedy, part dead serious drama.  A man (Josh Hartnett) shows up at his friend’s apartment only to find his friend gone and himself abducted…twice.  As he tries to piece together what why he’s been caught between two warring factions with the help of a plucky neighbor (Lucy Liu) you begin to find out that everything is not as it seems.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo – 2009 (Swedish)

The Swedish version of the Stieg Larson novel about the journalist Mikael Blomkvist and investigator Lisbeth Salander assigned initially to a case to find a long missing presumed dead girl turns into the search for a serial killer. The movie is in Swedish with english subtitles.  The Swedish version is more granular than its 2011 American version. It’s nonetheless a good take on the story and features two actors (Michael Nyqvist, Noomie Rapace) who should be familiar to American audiences.

Shanghai Knights – 2003

The follow up to hit 2000 comedy Shanghai Noon starring Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan, Shanghai Knights now finds the duo in London. Chaos and hilarity ensue as the two continue to get in trouble with both friends and enemies.  This movie is great physical comedy and a great movie if you just want to laugh and unplug for a bit.
